Razor Hair Cutting vs. Shears
Understanding the Difference & Choosing the Best Technique for Your Hair
When it comes to a great haircut, the tool matters just as much as the technique. As a master hair colorist and cutter with over 40 years behind the chair, I choose my cutting method based on your hair density, texture, movement, and the final shape you want to achieve.
Both razors and shears can create beautiful results—but they behave very differently.
⸻
Razor Cutting
Light, Airy, Lived-In Texture
A razor creates softness by removing weight and diffusing the ends. It slices through the hair in a way that encourages movement, separation, and a more casual, effortless finish.
Best For:
• Medium to thick hair needing movement
• Soft, lived-in layers
• Modern shags, wolf cuts, and textured bobs
• Clients who like a tousled, natural finish
Benefits of Razor Cutting:
• Creates softness without hard lines
• Enhances natural wave patterns
• Reduces bulk and heaviness
• Perfect for clients who want “wash-and-go” styling
Not Ideal For:
Very fine, brittle, or overly fragile hair. A razor on compromised hair can create frizz or make ends look weaker—this is why proper assessment is everything.
⸻
Shear (Scissor) Cutting
Precision, Control & Clean Structure
Shears deliver control, accuracy, and strength in the haircut. They create clean lines and structured shapes that hold their form beautifully.
Best For:
• Fine or delicate hair
• Blunt cuts, bobs, and classic shapes
• Clients who want polished, smooth styling
• Strong foundational haircuts that complement color placement
Benefits of Shear Cutting:
• Sharp, clean lines
• Strong perimeter and structure
• Less frizz on fragile hair
• Works well with precise color placement and balayage framing
Not Ideal For:
Very dense or bulky hair when the client wants movement—this is where razors or texturizing techniques may be added.

Which One Is Better?
Neither. The right technique is the one that supports the haircut you want and the integrity of your hair.
A great haircut isn’t about the tool—it’s about the stylist’s understanding of:
• Hair texture
• Density
• Growth pattern
• Desired style
• Face shape
• Lifestyle
Most professional haircuts use a combination of both tools to create balance:
Precision where you need it. Softness where you want it.

At Ooh La La Salon Spa, I tailor every cut to the individual. After 40+ years of cutting hair and mastering both techniques, I know when to use shears for strength and when to use a razor for movement.
The result is a haircut that fits you, enhances your color, grows out beautifully, and reflects your personal style.
